That really is quite poor, even though I don't mind the name in these PC times we have to accept certain do gooders are going to complain. You should have been given the chance to rename, this is not on by ArenaNet.

To be fair, nobody has mentioned "radical" Muslims, only devout/observant Muslims. All religions have their radical fanatics, but we're not talking about those wackos.

Maybe it was a "radical" who reported his name, who knows. Let's just hope that if it was a radical, he doesn't breed.

It's always a tricky one where religion is involved. Once you make naming restrictions a grey area then the GMs find themselves caught up in endless debates that go nowhere, hence it's a lot better all round if they simply have a clear rule that no religious names are allowed. I haven't come across a MMORPG or text MUD yet that allows them.

It only takes a little commonsense to come up with an original name that doesn't breach any game's naming policy.

As for deleting a character rather than simply renaming it, that's a welcome move and one long overdue. Once people see their well-developed characters being deleted rather than simply renamed the temptation to see what they can get away with will disappear.

I can see there's an argument in favour of a right of appeal - no doubt the character could be reinstated from the data logs if the appeal was successful, but once a policy of deletion becomes more common then the problem will all but disappear anyway.

quite honestly i could care less about the religious aspect of this whole debate. The name was meant to be witty and humorous. "Allah Mode" as a double meaning for "A La Mode" IS kind of funny... The whole reason this makes me so mad is that they have blatently banned my character without a chance to rename or replace him with a equal. It's not my fault someone was offended by it, maybe they should have done some research on the name. Maybe arena net should have done the same.

EDIT: I saw a muslim saying it is offensive to call a human a god. Only thing is that this is a rpg and the dude can be role playing a god if he want's

This is where the whole argument gets a little bit more interesting. There is a certain religion in where the believers are all potentially gods themselves if they lead a good life, and it is not a devilworshiping, satanistic cult either. So, what religion is it? Well, it just so happens to be a near main stream religion. The people of this religion call themselves Mormon. So, what if TCP_leader is a devote Mormon and one of very good and pure intentions that has been leading a saintly life and feels that if he died anytime soon, he would be able to transcend and become a god of his own planet? Maybe he cannot come up with a creative name for himself, or he may want to create a planet composed of 100% ice cream. Either way, Arenanet has a precarious situation it is now in: offend the Muslims or offend the Mormons.

If AN is going to ban names of religious origin then they need to ANNOUNCE that first, otherwise I would say they are in breach of contract, since no where is it mentioned that offensive nams will get banned. They HAVE to give the "offending : person a chance to re-name their character or AN are the ones being offensive.

It is a tough position to be in for AN, but very easy to manage with any of the good ideas mentioned here....

No, I can not make a character named "Dumb Head". I can make one named "Allah Mode". Don't delete characters after they are made. At least give the person a damned option to change their name. It's not my fault, nor ANet's problem that someone got offended. I say the people who sent the complaints get banned for being jerks.

I hope some muslim rights group comes along this and sues anets asses to hell for descrimination because Anet has decided that their religious affiliation is not appropriate for the public.

So, if they remove all religious affiliations from the game, then they need to remove the references to the in-game made up religion because my devote Christian teachings tell me that they are wrong and should be taught what is correct! I also am offended by the use of magic so all references to that should be removed as well! I think the offender is the one making the complaint. Because Christians and Muslims believe in the same God, then saying God/Allah is offensive is insulting also Christian beliefs. And in American "In God we trust". So whoever made an ignorant complaint like that is no lower then the ignorant idiots who go around making racist statements about the Koreans.

I am a muslim, and I think what you are doing is asinine. The point is that Allah means God, and you are not any sort of god. Try keeping religion out of games - it makes it so much more fun.

Post locked - trying to rile people to spam and annoy ArenaNet at this forum = not a good idea.

And lastly, posting a screenshot of the name you want, and incidentally having that very name banned on this forum was not a very good idea.
